At the European Branch of the International Association of Auto-Theft Investigators (IAATI) Annual Training Seminar which was held in Poland in October 2010, Detective Constable Vince Wise gave a presentation entitled – Weaknesses in The Shipping Process & Organised Vehicle Thefts in UK.
As the title suggests, the presentation covered the issues of organised vehicle theft through the docks at UK ports, concentrating on the shipping of containers and their contents.
The presentation goes through the process of getting a container out of the country, and the various companies and persons that handle the container.
You will be surprised at what can be fitted into a 40 foot container: from cars to plant to motorcycles.
The potential scale of the problem is highlighted by the fact that one ship can carry 15,800 containers which could equate to 63,000 cars in one shipment!
